Big Book Study aims to clarify AA’s textbook
The Friday night Big Book study at Cotton Tree is designed to increase participants understanding of the principles of AA’s 12 Step Program of recovery but is not designed to replace one-on-one sponsorship.
In a classroom setting, experienced members lead participants through the 12 Steps outlined in the basic text book, “Alcoholics Anonymous”. The aim is to introduce members to the precise, specific, clear-cut directions on how to recover from the seemingly hopeless state of mind and body that is the disease of alcoholism.
The weekly sessions explore the book’s Preface, The Forwards, The Doctor’s Opinion and the first seven chapters, finishing with Chapter 7 “Working With Others” (step 12).
Increased understanding of the 12 Step Program is the goal, so completing the entire cycle usually takes from 6 – 7 months, based on weekly meetings. On completion, sessions recommence at the beginning of book.
Beginning with the next series, a “Big Book Steps Workbook” will be available to participants. It will assist members in studying and working though the Basic Text Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, either with a sponsor or in our formal book study sessions.
